How is bone age determined?

An X-ray of the left hand must be generated to determine the bone age. After digital acquisition, the computer compares the recorded representation with existing comparison groups of the same chronological age. In a standard comparison procedure, different signs of maturity are verified and the biological age of the bones is determined with very high accuracy.

The accuracy of the match between the biological and chronological ages of the child allows conclusions to be drawn about any developmental problems. In addition, forecasts can be made about the height of the child that is still to be expected.

What do we need to determine physical maturity?

The specific bone age and the age of the child are only some necessary parameters for assessing the development. The following key data must also be known:

  • Current values of height and weight of the child
  • Body size and age of the mother
  • Height and age of the father
  • If applicable, menarche of the child (if so at what age).

How does the bone age determination work?

After a preliminary consultation, the X-ray takes only a few minutes. The resulting radiation exposure is minimal. After imaging and computer-assisted referencing, you will receive a brief evaluation in consultation with the examining specialist.

Are the costs covered by the health insurance?

Bone age determination is not covered by the statutory health insurance funds and is invoiced according to the respective valid scale of fees for physicians (GOA).
