Digital mammography (2D) in Munich

Digital mammography – Early detection of the disease through precise diagnostics is crucial for an optimal chance of recovery from breast cancer. This is supported in the best possible way by digital mammography. Digital mammography is a special X-ray examination, whereby a particularly good visibility of the glandular tissue of the breast is produced. In this way, even small differences in density can be detected. The composition of the tissue, visible through digital mammography, allows conclusions to be drawn about the problem areas palpated or probed during previous examinations.

How does a digital mammogram work?

In digital mammography, the breast is transilluminated with X-rays. In most cases, images are taken of each breast in 2 planes. This requires your assistance to achieve sufficient compression of the breast. Compression of the breast is important to achieve good image quality with the lowest possible radiation exposure. Our specialists search the breast tissue for

  • Changes in breast shape or size
  • Retractions or protrusions of the skin
  • Conspicuous micro calcification
  • Focal Findings

When is a digital mammogram needed?

If certain clinical findings exist and cannot be clarified directly by means of sonography, digital mammography can be used to provide rapid and accurate diagnostic support. This is especially the case with

  • conspicuous palpation or inspection findings in the breast and armpit, such as lumps, deformations, skin retractions or skin changes,
  • Changes in the nipples, or fluid leakage from the nipples, as well as
  • Pain and itching in the chest area

Separately, mammography may also be indicated in women with certain risk factors for breast cancer. If breast cancer occurs in first-degree relatives or if the age of 50 is exceeded, digital mammography offers optimal diagnostics. The examination can also be used in the best possible way for the detection of benign breast diseases (atypical hyperplasia) or after the birth of the first child beyond the age of 30.

Is there anything to consider before digital mammography?

On the day of the examination, we advise avoiding body lotion or deodorant. The particles contained therein can be displayed with the acquired images and thus falsify the diagnostics. You should remove ear and neck jewelry during the examination. Breast piercings or body jewelry in the breast area must be removed beforehand.

Are there any side effects?

During the examination, there may be a sensation of pressure on the breast being examined. The plexiglass discs used are adapted to the ergonomics of the female body, but the fixation of the breast can be perceived as uncomfortable. Follow-up side effects are absolutely rare and correspond to those of normal X-rays. The radiation exposure is low and corresponds to a risk-benefit balance.
